Solar Panels & Offsetting our Carbon Footprint

Having solar panels on your home is such a wonderful way to reduce your carbon footprint and live more sustainability. These days there are many federal and state tax credits available and even grant funds to help offset the expense to have solar panels installed on your home.

My husband is the co-owner of a solar business. To say he is a solar nerd is an understatement. At the beginning of each month, my husband looks online where our household solar production is recorded on a daily basis and tracks a variety of interesting stats. His monthly check is to find out how much energy our solar panels generated last month and what that equates to in our carbon offset.

What I love best about my husband’s monthly check is his sharing of the last month’s report. It always brings a smile to my face when he casually relays the stats, the "report" he shared tonight was "Last month we generated enough energy to offset 249 pounds of carbon which equates to three whole trees!"

Here's How it shows up on the tracking system:

Your Carbon Offsets

Your Enphase system generated 164 kWh of energy during the month of July 2012.

CO2 offsets: 249 lbs
You have offset the equivalent of:
3 Trees

I don’t think I’ll ever lose my excitement for having solar panels on our roof. Every time I feel the bright sun shining down and even on cloudy days, I know that the solar panels are creating energy to offset all the electricity we use.

I hope someday that we can be completely off grid, but for now I’m grateful for the panels we do have that offset about 1/3- 1/2 of the power that we use. Just knowing that last month we offset enough carbon to equate three trees makes me so happy that we’re reducing our carbon footprint every day just by the sun rising in the sky!

    1. I totally agree more homes and businesses should go solar, we have some state and federal tax credits to help out plus the local power company is offering some grant money which is helping more folks go solar in MT. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Thank you! Although we have just a few panels now, it is a start. We're hoping to be able to add more later this year. I would love for us to one day have enough panels to meet all our energy needs but for now am excited we have the panels we do!
