Buying local is something that is near and dear to my heart. After working my first season as a vender at our local market this last summer, I can honestly say that I am extremely grateful for the folks who shopped at our local market. When they made a purchase at our stand, it helped to support our family.
I was thrilled when I found out I had the opportunity to share a generous giveaway with you all to help promote buying local: $50 to one lucky winner to spend in your local community!
1. Supports the local economy. By shopping local, your money stays in the community and helps to provide an income to someone in your community. It provides a job in a tough economy. It supports the hard working farmers and work from home families that vend at market. I know that the money I just spent locally helped to pay a neighbor’s rent and another family’s groceries.
2. Builds community. Farmer’s Markets are an amazing space where people from all walks of like in a community come together. At my local market stand, I loved getting to meet people in our neighborhood that otherwise I had never interacted with in the six years we have lived here. Folks would chat about the happenings in the neighborhood, tell me about their grandchildren they were buying a hat for or stories about their canning experiences when they bought a Mason Jar Solar Lantern. We connected. We built community.
3. Reduces waste. Buying local drastically reduces the waste since the products do not have to be shipped in large boxes from out of state. The times we do shop online for things we can’t find locally, the items come to our house in boxes full of packaging materials. I try to reuse these materials when I ship out items I sell in my Etsy shop but not everyone does that and instead throw it in the trash.
4. Lower cost. Buying from your local market is more affordable because you don’t have to pay a mark-up like you would in the store to cover their overhead cost. You don’t have to pay for shipping fees like you do online. Sometimes you can even barter and trade with small market venders, which you can read more about here.
5. Feels good. Buying local always leaves me with a good feeling inside. I leave with a smile and a thank you from the family running their market stand. I feel good about the fact that my hard earned money I just spent is not supporting a huge corporation but my friends, neighbors and community.
So now that you know WHY you should buy local, here’s your chance to win $50 to spend at your local market!

I choose to buy locally because I like to know exactly where my food is coming from. I can speak directly to the farmer or artisan that is making the product I am about to buy, and find out where they grow their food, what their farming practices are, etc.
It tastes better and helps the local farmers.
I buy locally to support the local economy and because it’s better for the environment.
I I choose to buy locally to encourage our local farmers to continue what they do and to use less pesticide.
