This recipe for Zucchini Mock Crab Cakes has been in our family for a number of years. I remember back when my mom first found this recipe and made it for our family. We loved it so much it became one of our favorite recipes to use up our abundance of zucchini in the the summer.
This recipe also freezes well. When my mom came out to help us shortly after our little nugget arrived last year, we had a couple zucchini some friends gave us. My mom made up a bunch of these cakes, cooked them and froze them in plastic zip bags. It was the perfect side dish or snack for us and easy to pull out of the freezer and warm up.
Zucchini Mock Crab Cakes
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 TBS minced or shredded onion
2 eggs
¼ tsp celery seed
½ tsp Old Bay Seasoning* (or more if you like)
1 cup bread crumbs**
Mix all ingredients. If too moist, add more bread crumbs. Form into patties and fry in your choice of oil. I used to use olive oil but recently began using coconut oil since it cooks better in our cast iron pans and it worked great for these with no sticking.
*If you can’t find this in the store (my mom has to mail it to us since we can’t find it locally) the ingredients are celery salt, mustard, red pepper, black pepper, bay leaves, cloves, allspice, ginger, mace, cardamon, cinnamon, and paprika.
**I made our own bread crumbs instead of buying them like I used to. Simply save the heals of your bread in the freezer until you’re ready to make the crumbs. Toast the bread but be careful not to burn it. Once the bread is toasted and crispy, break it into pieces and put in a food processor. Pulse until you have fine bread crumbs.

I’ve been making a variation of these this summer, they’re delicious! The recipe I’ve been using just calls for flour, but I think I will try the bread crumbs next time.
Since I started using our homemade bread crumbs, they are even more tasty since we buy really yummy bread from a local bakery. They are quite delicious
I HAVE to make these I will love them!!! I am always looking for new veggie recipes! popping in from foodie friday!
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
This looks pretty good! Do you serve anything with it? it seems like it might be a little dry. Thanks for sharing on Foodie Friday!
Thanks for stopping by Adelina! When I first started making them a number of years ago I had a few batches that were a little dry but now I slowly add the bread crumbs so I get the moisture level just right. The Old Bay Seasoning gives it such a good flavor that we eat them just how they are and sometimes even eat just these for a meal! We also like to eat them as a side dish with grilled venison steaks and a tasty salad.
This is a really cool recipe. I can’t wait to try it out. I’m not a big fan of crab, but I love crab cakes. But this a great alternative to serve at a low country broil where there isn’t anything but seafood. This is a great choice for someone who isn’t a seafood eater like myself. Thanks for sharing. Love from your newest follower, Whimsically Homemade!
So true, I hadn’t thought about how it is a great veggie option for someone who isn’t big on seafood since the Old Bay Seasoning gives it the flavor!
What a great recipe for all that wonderful end of summer squash we have right now. Hope you have a great holiday weekend and thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday.
Come Back Soon!

Thanks Miz Helen! Hope you enjoy your long weekend too
Thanks for linking up to Snacktime Saturday! This would be a great addition to our freezer stash, can’t wait to try it.
These look delicious but does the Old Bay seasoning make them taste fishy? I’m not exactly a fan of seafood. The only things I eat are clam chowder (the white kind), fish sticks and fried breaded clams.lol. Any ideas for different seasoning that would be just as yummy?
I don’t like a lot of seafood for the same reason! The Old Bay Seasoning actually gives it a unique spicy flavor and doesn’t have a fishy taste at all. You could try the recipe and omit the Old Bay Seasoning and probably use something as simple as salt, pepper and garlic to give it a little flavor. If you do try a different spice combo with it I would love to hear how it turns out so please come back and share
Thanks for sharing this recipe! I used to make them years ago (I think they were in an old Adventist cookbook?) but had long since lost the recipe and couldn’t find it again. Thanks for sharing it : )
