*Don’t know what an oryx is? I didn’t either so did some research and found out that it is a large antelope native to Africa that has tender, delicious meat. In the late 1960’s through the 1970’s there were oryx released on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico with the intent of growing an animal population to offer more hunting options. There are now over 3,000 oryx in the area and limited hunting tags are awarded every year to help manage the herd. The oryx can weigh up to 450 pounds and stand about as tall as an average size car! If you’re curious to learn more about the oryx, how they are managed or put in for your chance to get a tag to hunt oryx visit this National Park Service link by clicking here.

Love this series. I have hunted before, but I am a rather antsy person and deer don’t come around me!! My hubby and both kids hunt though and we love it!
I’m a bit antsy too so don’t sit for long periods of time, plus around here it is pretty cold during rifle season which makes sitting long not very fun anyway! Here in MT the areas we hunt are so vast that we like to quietly hike through the woods when we hunt, keeps us much warmer too
Yea Krista! I’m loving this series!
I can’t wait until we get to share your story soon Halli
I know Krista and she is awesome!! I’m loving this series!
I didn’t know you knew each other, small world!
Great interview! I’ve never hunted so it’s interesting learning about the experiences of others!
Thanks Trisha, it’s been really fun for me also to “meet” other women hunters online and be able to share their stories as part of this series
Another great piece Annie! I had no idea that we had implanted Oryx here! Neat! I thought for sure Krista was a lucky African safari hunter when I saw the photo! Rock on, both of you!
That’s totally what I thought too when she said she went on an oryx hunt! I had never heard of them before and was fascinated to read about how they were chosen to be transplanted into NM and now they’re thriving there.
Nice to read about another rural Nebraskan. Great interview and this gal is amazing.
Love that her husband carried the engagement ring around in his hunting vest. That is so something that my husband would do.
Totally agree about the limited amount of women’s camo. I wear all men’s hunting clothes because that was all that was available in the local stores. I should order online…
Learned something knew about the oryx and how they landed on our shores. It is amazing the diversity of hunting game options. Thanks for sharing!
