Polishing silver is not something I do very often but when I need to, I use this easy natural polish: toothpaste. I’m sure you’re asking yourself “Toothpaste?” and thinking I’m crazy. But I swear it works wonders. Even the natural brand toothpaste we have does the trick. No need for special chemical cleaners or polishing cloths, just a dab of toothpaste!

I read a number of years ago about using toothpaste as a silver polish. It was one of those random facts that stuck in my head until I needed it a few years later. My need for polishing silver occurs every time we go to some natural mineral hotsprings. The mineral water causes silver to tarnish so it is recommended you remove any silver jewelry before soaking.

I’ve had a nose ring for over 14 years so I don’t ever think to take it out and it gets tarnished every time. Last month a friend and I went to soak in some hot springs for an afternoon and I realized that I could not get my silver wedding ring off. My fingers are not as slender since having a baby so until I lose a little more baby weight, the ring is permanently on my finger. We were pretty amazed at how tarnished my ring became in the hot springs even when I tried to keep it out of the water!

Since I can’t get the ring off my finger, I squirted some toothpaste in my right hand and rubbed down the silver of the ring. To get in the little groove under the elk ivory setting I used a q-tip dipped in toothpaste.

Now next time you have something silver to polish, no need to buy a special polishing cloth or chemical polish (although I don’t recommend using toothpaste to polish great grandmas’s silver family heirloom.) Save your money and just use toothpaste!
