How to Regrow Green Onions Year Round

Green onions are one of those things that always used to be on my grocery list. At 99 cents a bunch it may not sound like a lot of money but over a month it would add up to a few dollars. Being able to grow green onions year round in Montana helps us save money over time. Plus it is always fun to have a mini-garden indoors while it dumps snow outside in the winter!

Growing green onions does not take a lot of gardening skills so don’t be scared off if you don’t have a green thumb. You also don’t have to worry about buying seeds and waiting for the plants to grow big enough to eat after a few months.

The How-To:

The next time you buy a bunch of green onions, only chop up and use the top part of the onion to the white part of the stalk. This is typically about 2-3” from the bottom of the onion. Place about a 1/2” of water in a glass jar and stand the green onions in the jar so the roots are covered in water. In about two days you will notice there is green growth starting to shoot up, it happens that quickly!

You can leave the onions in water if you remember to give them fresh water everyday or you can plant them in a pot of dirt and water as needed. They will grow about 5-6″ in a week just by sitting in a jar of water. Anytime you need green onions, simply snip off what you need and allow them to keep growing!

I’ve done this for quite a while, it’s a real money saver, and I never have to worry about a run to the store just for green onions.

Wow, this looks so simple, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Green onions is something I always forget to buy and then the dish I make is lacking that special something. Have to try this!

I’ve been re-growing celery (and linked up that post since I posted about it last week) but somehow it never occurred to me to re-grow green onions. What a great idea! I’ve just emptied a tall thin jelly jar that will be perfect. Thanks!
