Green onions are one of those things that always used to be on my grocery list. At 99 cents a bunch it may not sound like a lot of money but over a month it would add up to a few dollars. Being able to grow green onions year round in Montana helps us save money over time. Plus it is always fun to have a mini-garden indoors while it dumps snow outside in the winter!
Growing green onions does not take a lot of gardening skills so don’t be scared off if you don’t have a green thumb. You also don’t have to worry about buying seeds and waiting for the plants to grow big enough to eat after a few months.
You can leave the onions in water if you remember to give them fresh water everyday or you can plant them in a pot of dirt and water as needed. They will grow about 5-6″ in a week just by sitting in a jar of water. Anytime you need green onions, simply snip off what you need and allow them to keep growing!

I’ve done this for quite a while, it’s a real money saver, and I never have to worry about a run to the store just for green onions.
Very awesome! I love green onions and look forward to trying this so we can have a ready supply any time. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, this looks so simple, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Green onions is something I always forget to buy and then the dish I make is lacking that special something. Have to try this!
I’ve been re-growing celery (and linked up that post since I posted about it last week) but somehow it never occurred to me to re-grow green onions. What a great idea! I’ve just emptied a tall thin jelly jar that will be perfect. Thanks!
Interesting! Thanks for this info!
I love how easy this is to do! I would just need to remember to change the water. Do you have to keep them in the fridge?
So cool! I love green onions, and didn’t realize I could regrow them. Thanks for linking up at Fabulously Frugal Thursday!
